Health and safety consultants, with decades of experience within the manufacturing sector, Southalls has joined the Made in the Midlands as patrons to the group. The company is looking forward to offering support to the broader community of Midlands manufacturers, cross-sharing knowledge and networking with fellow members.

What does Southalls do?

Southalls provides ‘common sense’ health and safety solutions to UK-based manufacturers. Based in Solihull, the firm works with many sites across our region to reduce risk, streamline processes and build practical safety programmes to keep workers protected and businesses compliant.

What makes Southalls stand out against others in their field of H&S, is their dedication and passion for health and safety in our sector, building partnerships with their clients, promoting compliance and protecting plants from closures.

What is Southalls history?

Flashback to 2000, Southalls began at Birmingham University where creators John and Angela Southall met while studying for their MSc degrees in Environmental Health. After gaining successful careers as environmental health officers, they dreamed of a new kind of consultancy for their clients.

Their goal was to outpace traditional health and safety companies - driven by real people and delivering exceptional results. They began Southalls in 2003 and now support businesses worldwide. Their dedication to brilliant results and 98% client retention rate remains since day one.

How have they helped manufacturers?

Southalls offers health and safety solutions combining industry-leading expertise and ex- enforcement officers’ knowledge to protect manufacturers from detrimental issues in the workshop. The Southalls team works alongside manufacturers, making sure they have a
wider understanding of their budget and business goals, offering bespoke services to every client. Some of their services include employee health and safety training, DSEAR, asbestos and legionella, fire risk assessments and more.

Their advanced H&S management software, Safety Cloud, allows users to manage compliance online while making it accessible to the whole team and sites, at any given time and device. Trusted by over 150,000 users worldwide, the software is a hub for online staff safety training, safety checks, task delegation, accident logs and more.

Many of the health and safety consultants at Southalls come from an ex-enforcement background, adding to their unique offering, with niche knowledge when it comes to inspections. In a recent example of support for manufacturers, the firm helped John Tainton,
distributors of high-quality steel, ramp up their safety programme. Richard Wandless, Operations Director, said:

“Southalls provides excellent value for money and targeted expertise”.

The firm signed up to be part of Made in the Midlands to help manufacturing, which is an extremely high-risk industry, with their health and safety needs while promoting the safety culture across sites. Alongside offering their fully managed H&S support, they want to reassure UK-based businesses that the solution is just around the corner. Ian Hatherly, Business Director at Southalls, said:

“As a strong health and safety team blended with some of the top ex-enforcement officers, we understand what inspectors are looking for, which is a real benefit to manufacturers when it comes to regulations and manslaughter sentencing guidelines. We’ve been working with hundreds of businesses across the country and are excited to start helping the wider Made in the Midlands community with our world-class sector expertise combined with a clear view of commercial reality, offering occupational health and safety solutions that make solid financial sense.”
